Discovery of the Silver Boa: A New Species from the Bahamas

Researchers from Harvard University in the United States have discovered and described a new species of boa from a remote island in the Bahamas. Named the Conception Bank silver boa (Chilabothrus argentum) for its unique silver coloration, the snake was first observed climbing a silver palm tree, suggesting its color may serve as camouflage. During the expedition, one snake even dropped onto the face of lead researcher Dr. Graham Reynolds as he slept on the forest floor.

Genetic analysis of tissue samples confirmed the snake as a new species. Robert Henderson, a boa expert at the Milwaukee Museum of Natural History, noted the rarity and significance of this discovery, highlighting the beautiful Bahamian silver boa as potentially critically endangered and a reminder that important findings still await.

Chilabothrus argentum is arboreal, primarily feeding on birds. Reynolds advocates for its classification as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to threats from natural disasters, the illegal pet trade, and feral cats on Conception Island Bank. Fortunately, all islands in the bank are national parkland with rare human visitation, offering some protection.
