U.S. House Judiciary Committee Passes H.R. 511 to Restrict Trade of Additional Constricting Snakes

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee has passed H.R. 511, a bill that would add more constricting snake species to the restricted trade list in the United States. Authored by Florida Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, the legislation calls for restricting the trade of the Boa constrictor (Boa constrictor imperator) and all subspecies, the reticulated python (Python reticulatus), and green (Eunectes murinus), beni (Eunectes beniensis), and DeSchauensee (Eunectes deschauenseei) anacondas.

Currently, the bill has only passed a subcommittee and must still be heard by the entire House as required by law. If it passes the House, it will then proceed to the Senate for approval to become law.

If enacted, H.R. 511 would impose restrictions on the sale, importation, and transportation of the Boa constrictor and the four other specified snake species in the United States.

This follows an earlier ban on large constricting snakes, which becomes effective March 23, 2012. That initial law restricts the importation and transportation of the Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus), the northern (Python sebae) and southern African rock python (Python natalensis), and the yellow anaconda (Eunectes notaeus).
